Etna is an open-air science classroom that incredibly fascinates children. Seeing black rocks, understanding how lava flows (even if petrified) and walking on a real volcano is an experience they will remember forever. However, not all paths are suitable for short legs and limited endurance of little ones.
Etna South: Silvestri Craters
For families with small children (from 4 years up), the ideal destination is the Silvestri Craters on the South side (Sapienza Refuge). They are two extinct craters, very scenic and very easy to reach directly from the parking lot.
The lower crater can be visited with a 15-20 minute walk almost flat or with a slight uphill, feasible even with children who walk little. There are no particular dangers, but always hold their hand because the ground is gravelly and you can slip.
Etna North: Piano Provenzana and Sartorius
If your children are a bit older (6-7 years) and used to walking, Etna North offers the Sartorius Craters. It's beautiful nature trail, crossing a white birch forest (fairy-tale!) and leads to a series of 7 buttonhole craters.
The route is about 3-4 km round trip, with a gentle elevation gain. It is perfect for a picnic in nature away from the crowds of the South side.
Age Limits for High Altitude
Watch out for high altitude. Excursions to the Summit Craters (3300m) are not recommended, and often prohibited by ordinances, for children under 10 years old. This is due to sulfurous fumes that can bother more delicate lungs and the fatigue of trekking.
Even the ascent by cable car up to 2500m should be evaluated well if you have infants, due to the rapid pressure change that can hurt ears.
How to Involve Children
To avoid boredom, turn the excursion into a treasure hunt. Etna is full of 'treasures': ladybugs hiding under stones (there are millions!), volcanic bombs of strange shapes, pieces of lava that look like faces.
Tell them the story of the Cyclopes or the giant Enceladus trapped under the mountain. If they hear a rumble, it's the giant turning over in bed! Mythology makes the landscape alive in their eyes.
Specific Equipment for Little Ones
Don't dress them too much! Children run and sweat more than adults. Better to dress them light but with a small backpack ready with a change.
Sunglasses are fundamental. Children's eyes are more sensitive and the reflection of the sun on black stone (or snow) can cause conjunctivitis. Hat and sunscreen 50+ must never be missing.
Etnaland: The Final Prize
If you manage to make them walk in the morning, promise them an afternoon (or the next day) at Etnaland. It is located in Belpasso, at the foot of the volcano, and is the largest amusement park and water park in Southern Italy.
Seeing the volcano from water slides is a fun way to end the holiday in style.
