It is the most frequent question hikers ask before leaving: "Can we go all the way to the top?". The short answer is: it depends. Etna is not a simple mountain, but an active volcano in constant change. Access is strictly regulated for your safety. Let's see exactly who decides and how to know if it's possible to climb today.
Who decides if you can go up?
Many think it's the guides or tour operators who decide, but that's not the case. There is a precise chain of command:
- INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology): The scientific body. Loops the volcano 24/7 with seismographs and cameras and communicates data (tremor, gas, ground deformation). They do not close Etna, but say "Hey, something is happening".
- Civil Protection (Regional Department): Based on INGV data, issues the "Volcanic Alert" level (Green, Yellow, Orange, Red).
- The Mayors (e.g. Nicolosi, Linguaglossa): They are the final authority. Based on the Civil Protection alert, they sign the Mayoral Ordinances. These ordinances act as law and establish at what altitude one must stop (e.g. "forbidden to exceed 2900m").
Alert Colors and What They Mean for You
When planning your hike, check the volcanic "Traffic Light":
🟢 GREEN LEVEL (Ordinary Activity)
Calm situation. Usually you can go up to the Summit Craters (3300m) but only accompanied by Volcanological Guides.
🟡 YELLOW LEVEL (Caution)
Activity increases. Often the first restrictions trigger. Access to summit craters is forbidden. The limit usually drops to 2900m (Torre del Filosofo) or 2750m.
🟠 ORANGE LEVEL (Pre-alarm)
Probable or ongoing eruption. Limits drop drastically, often to 2500m (cable car area). Strictly forbidden to go higher.
🔴 RED LEVEL (Alarm)
Dangerous eruption in progress. Access forbidden almost everywhere above the refuges.

- Civil Protection Department (Etna Risk): Where official alert levels are published.
- Official Notice Board of Nicolosi/Linguaglossa: To read the mayoral ordinances (legal value). Unfortunately there isn't a single "digital traffic light", you have to search for PDF documents.
- Us and the Volcanological Guides: This is the most practical method. Guides are in constant radio contact with the operations room. If you book a tour, you will be notified immediately if the summit is off-limits.
If the Summit is Closed, Is It Worth Going?
Absolutely yes. Often, when the summit is closed for "lively" activity, it is the best time to see the show from a safe distance! Panoramic points like the Montagnola (2500m) or the Schiena dell'Asino offer an incredible view of lava flows and explosions, without taking risks.
