Etna & Alcantara Gorges
Are you looking for the ultimate adventure in Sicily? Our Etna and Alcantara Gorges excursion is the most comprehensive and popular tour to discover the island's two geological wonders in a single day. Perfect for those staying in and looking for a tour from Catania or Taormina, this experience combines the adrenaline of Europe's highest active volcano with the refreshing coolness of the Alcantara River.

Adventure on the North Side of Etna
Our journey begins by exploring the Northern Slope of Etna, the most authentic, green, and wild side of the volcano. On board our comfortable 4x4 vehicles or minivans, we will cross the ancient and fragrant Pineta Ragabo (Ragabo Pine Forest) along the scenic Mareneve road. Here, the landscape changes dramatically: from lush forests, we move onto the imposing black, recent lava flows—silent witnesses to the power of nature, such as the destructive 2002 eruption that wiped out Piano Provenzana.

Trekking to the Extinct Craters and Lava Cave
The excursion on Etna continues on foot with an easy, family-friendly trek around the Sartorius Craters at an altitude of approximately 1,700 meters. You will walk along the rim of these extinct "button craters" (crateri a bottoniera), enjoying breathtaking views stretching from the volcano to the Ionian Sea. But the adventure doesn't end there: equipped with helmets and flashlights provided by us, we will venture into the depths of the earth to explore the fascinating Grotta dei Ladroni, a natural lava tube used in the past as an ice house (neviera) to store ice.

Lunch break: Sicilian flavours included
Halfway through the day we stop at a typical mountain refuge at the foot of Etna for a Sicilian lunch included in the price. A traditional first course, a drink and coffee to recharge in a friendly atmosphere, surrounded by the volcano's woods, before heading on to the Alcantara Gorges.

Relax at the Alcantara Gorges
After a refreshing stop for a typical Sicilian lunch (included in the price), we will leave the volcano behind and head toward the river valley. Here, you will admire the famous Alcantara Gorges, a spectacular natural canyon featuring columnar basalt walls up to 25 meters high, created by the rapid cooling of lava in contact with freezing river water. You can walk along the riverbed, splash in its crystal-clear waters, or simply relax on the small beach while admiring geological formations unique in the world. A perfect ending combining geology, history, and nature.
