The Dilemma: Which Side to Choose?

2025-12-22 Etna Excursion Team 5 min read

It's the question everyone asks: 'Should I go South or North?'. Etna is so big (over 1200 sq km) that the two sides seem like two different mountains. On one side lunar landscapes and cable cars, on the other dense woods and tranquility. Let's discover the differences together.

Etna South: Rifugio Sapienza

It is the most famous and touristic side. Here you will find the Etna Cable Car, which allows you to easily climb to 2500m. The landscape is barren, black, desert-like. It is here that many of the recent eruptions that threatened the towns have occurred.

Pros: Easy access to summit craters, services (bars, souvenirs), cable car. Cons: Very crowded, less vegetation.

Etna North: Piano Provenzana

It is the 'green' side. Here pine forests and birch woods dominate. In winter it is the main ski resort. The atmosphere is more alpine and relaxed. From here, excursions depart for the Volcanological Observatory and the 2002 Craters.

Pros: Pristine nature, less crowd, view of Taormina/Calabria. Cons: No cable car (you go up by 4x4 bus or on foot), more winding road to get there.

Why Choose It

  • SOUTH: Touristy, Cable Car, Lunar Landscape
  • NORTH: Naturalistic, Woods, Alpine Landscape
  • SOUTH: Ideal for families and those with little time
  • NORTH: Ideal for hikers and lovers of silence
